PAL/NTSC, region free player plays everything

I have an Oppo DVD player that plays everything. The kids have monopolized the TV in the living room so we decided to turn the guest room into a lounge with TV and DVD. I first got a $10 DVD player from HHGregg and yes you get what you pay for. Some discs played fine, but some higher bitrate stuff (e.g. when you get into action scenes) just stuttered, making the movies unplayable. Blu-ray players weren't much bigger than DVD players, so I ended up buying a Panasonic 3D. Blu-ray player, assuming I can hack it to play regionless DVDs. Should have done some research before buying! Of course it only plays NTSC Region 1 and I couldn't find a hack for the North American version. This did not include my wife's European collection of DVDs and PAL home videos. There was evidence that the international version could be hacked - if you have or can find a compatible third-party remote ($$). There was a site that offered alternative firmware, but the operator seemed obnoxious rather than helpful, despite charging for the firmware. Also, I couldn't get used to the touchpad. The kids had to keep watching in the living room because the player in the break room couldn't play the disc they wanted to see. So I started looking for a new DVD player with no regional restrictions. I found this one and it really reproduced everything I had thrown at it. I have my living room back! I haven't tried Blu-Ray on it, but my collection is limited and all North American, so no problem. And the remote control is normal, it is a pleasure to use. It bookmarks and remembers where they've been when kids can't finish something in one sitting. I have nothing to complain about and would definitely buy it again.

Pros
  • PAL/NTSC compatible (110-240 volts)
Cons
  • You could choose a newer model
