The best alternative if you don't have space for a saw.

I had a difficult case where I had some rotting, moisture damaged 2x6 horizontal lintels in an exterior wall that were nailed on the inside. I didn't have room to put the saw in. This worked great for me to hollow out the sections and remove the headings.
