I have many years of positive experience with cooling scarves. This product is no different. It relies on evaporation to keep you cool, so it works better in places with lower humidity. You don't want to overexpose any of these foods, nor do you want to "squash" them. You can push part of the gel through the material. This will make it "slimy" and eventually the vest will no longer be effective once the gel is removed. Do not follow the "soak" instructions. Instead, spray water inside and out and leave the vest on for a few minutes. If you don't get the bottom few inches of the vest wet, water running down it is unlikely to wet your pants. Wear something very light and quick drying underneath your vest and if possible something like nylon shorts, lycra or something else that dries quick over the bottom of your vest. This way, if water runs down your vest (thanks, gravity), your pants will also dry quickly if they get wet, and evaporation will help keep you cool. This is a great product and looks very nice.
