I almost didn't buy this shoe bench because of all the reviews about the holes not lining up and screws breaking through. However, the holes lined up exactly as they should. If you are "lazy" and think the holes will line up while lying on the ground, you're mistaken. Because of the many offsets of the bench (which adds to the look - see photos), sometimes you have to lift the parts slightly off the ground so they line up. Also, using the included screwdriver helps keep piece ten (10) off the ground and lined up (see photo). As long as you use the short screws (as instructed), the screws do not break through the wood. Yes, it's particle board, but it has many screws at the correct pressure points to support your weight. To see realistically how many shoes it holds, I wear 11.5" to 12" shoes; about three pairs fit per shelf and hang out slightly.
