Comcast really doesn't want you to buy and use your own modem. It will likely take a few calls as not all tech support staff know what they are talking about or how to get both the data and voice portions of this device to work properly. This device is also a router which I don't use because my Netlink router works much better. When you plug this in, it broadcasts a public Wi-Fi network (as well as a private one) for any other Xfinity client to use. I didn't like the idea of someone coming to my house and chatting to use the public hotspot, so I disabled that feature. Presumably, someone accessing public WiFi on this device won't be able to access private WiFi, but who knows for sure these days. Better safe than sorry, right? Regardless of what the seller tells you, you cannot activate this modem yourself. They give instructions but they are totally, totally, totally wrong.
