There were some setup errors that may be related to the fingerprint reader itself. The reader is Hello compatible and works with Windows 10 without additional drivers. However, when I first plugged the fingerprint reader into my keyboard's USB port so that it was conveniently accessible from the back, Windows 10 refused to treat the reader as something compatible with Hello. Moving the reader to a USB hub produced the same results. It wasn't until I first plugged the reader into a port that connected directly to the PC's motherboard that Windows accepted it as a Hello-compatible device. After the reader started working and the Hello setup was complete, I was able to move the reader back to the keyboard and it works fine. The reading area is a small rectangle as opposed to the larger and more square area my laptop reader has. As far as I know, the device is just a reader (scanner) and doesn't store anything - Windows determines whether the fingerprint matches or not. The small footprint or low resolution can mean that I can sometimes unlock my computer when I shouldn't, namely with a different finger than the one I learned Hello with. Maybe 1/10th of the time I can unlock my computer with a random different finger (e.g. left hand middle finger) instead of right hand index finger which is used for tweaking. This leads me to believe that a random person can unlock my computer after trying long enough. Maybe Windows will prevent asking for a PIN after three failed attempts, or maybe not. However, in your home, this fingerprint reader comes in very handy. It's a quick read and Hello doesn't seem particularly orientation-sensitive, so just type quickly and you're done.
