I bought this to replace the filter on a 5 gallon tank. It was the only one close to what originally came with the tank. Here are the reasons not to buy: - very noisy - the whole hose is twisted which doesn't let water through unless you hold it straight - you can't really test the hose without cutting it off because it's too long for the size of the device, so once it's cut open for testing, you can't get it back. On its own it pushes the water out too aggressively for a beta fish and I think many other fish would also be in a small tank with this device - a chunk came out of the device right away. It's not clear if it was supposed to be detachable and makes everyone nervous because it's an electronic scuba, just for me personally it was too big to fit in the compartment that also contained the native pump. So there is something to consider.
