While this does a good job of detecting the presence of gas (I tried NG, propane and butane all detected), you have to have a fairly serious leak to power it up take care of . I was really hoping this would help answer the random "Do you smell gas?" questions and can help ensure gas appliances are plugged in properly. However, my testing requires you to be very close to the source, there must be a significant amount of gas, and there is a slight lag in detection. . It goes straight from green to red even when testing with a Bic lighter. So if you take your detector, turn it on and wait for it to go into a ready state and start looking for a natural gas leak, there will likely be so much gas around that you'll know something's not without it having to beep. Another minor annoyance is that it beeps when it doesn't detect anything, just to let you know it's on. I can't say I would recommend this to anyone. Although it detects gas, it's utterly useless for small holes or slow leaks.
