good vacuum, follow instructions

I needed a powerful vacuum to clean a 55 gallon tank and this item worked well. It arrived in a surprisingly small box and was easy to assemble. By the way, do not be stupid and follow the instructions, do not turn on the pump when it is not in the water. The pump uses water for cooling, and if you run it dry you'll ruin the pump pretty quickly, as other reviewers have pointed out. You will also need some common sense. After immersion in water, wait for the device to fill. Deflate the top of the device before turning it on. I didn't need the filter unit and threw it away. It comes with a tapered hose adapter that fits both 1/2" and 5/8" hoses. I ran 30 feet of 1/2 inch ID vinyl hose to get to my sink, where I connected a brass garden hose to a faucet with a 2-way Y-valve. The pump does an excellent job of moving dirty water with debris through a 30-foot pipe. In fact, he pumped the water too fast and sometimes even pulled up the gravel. The device has a flow control, which I usually set at around 50%. This works very well. After using it as a vacuum, I turn off the pump and use the machine to fill the tank from the sink. So this is a big improvement over using a siphon vacuum and buckets. And it's better than vacuum devices that try to use a siphoning effect of running water in a sink. The only downside I can think of is that the plastic tubing on the pump assembly is a bit flimsy. Maybe it's because I have a lot of gravel in my tank and actually siphoned it off. To avoid breaking the hose, I reach out and hold the assembly directly over the pump while using it. Maybe I'll replace the tubing on the unit with something thicker, like 1/2" PVC.
