It's like playing warm. warmer. cold. warmer. hot. red hot! Smoking is hot! You play like a kid looking for something. The closer you get to the cable, the louder it gets. Just flipped the switch, connected the alligator clips to the white and black wires, turned on these bad guys and figured out where the wires go. This worked for me as I just stood in a room with a wire in the wall and walked around. Once you've found the wire you can also touch the wires to stop the beeping and this will confirm you've selected the correct wires. I've tested it on a 12 gauge 120v receiver wire in my house and on an 18 gauge 24v thermostat and control valve wire in my house. Ethernet or phone connections not checked. Only Con's 9V batteries are sold separately. The instructions state that before using 120 volt cords, you must ensure that they are not connected to a power source as this is dangerous and can damage the unit. These tools do not confirm whether the cable is powered or not, only where the cables go.
