Overall good but some issues

I bought this straightener to replace my previous styling product. The old one was a combo straightener and styling brush, so this was my first "real" straightener. When ordering I wanted something black and I wanted the plates to be both ceramic and floating. This iron looks exactly like the photo, although the white parts stand out more. It's smaller than I expected at 10.5 inches end-to-end (add another 1.25 inches for cord extension), but the panels themselves are only 4 inches long, so they have less surface area than I thought. The iron is easy to set up, heats up quickly and emits a soft beep when it's done. I really wanted the auto-off feature, although I don't need it yet. the mechanism that does it. I left it open on the counter, however, as the locking mechanism, which slides down a bit next to the fork, seems pretty fragile; I will probably only use it for travel. Another slightly annoying issue is that because the iron is rounded at the bottom, it's a bit unstable when I put it on the countertop. When I use it, I usually lay it open on its side. It's pretty uncomfortable. but it works. The swivel works well and is long enough (although shorter than my previous device). It took me a while to get used to this product, especially on my fine hair. I find the recommended temperatures for fine hair never work for me; I need more heat to give my straight hair some hold. I usually use this set at 390* when smoothing and 360* when creating waves and it works well. (For some strange reason the temperature control is sometimes in 10* increments, sometimes in 20* increments). The floating plates don't work as well as I had hoped as my hair still slips from time to time. Also, the palm rests right where the top of the iron's hinge opens, and it's VERY easy to pinch skin when I close the iron. At first I thought I might return this iron as it was uncomfortable to use and I was struggling with some of the issues above. But now that I've gotten more skilled at using it, I've found that it works pretty well. I don't think this is the best iron but for what I paid it was a good deal and met my needs.
