I started using black plastic as a mulch (ground cover) a few years ago, cautiously at first, and now I'm not thinking of growing vegetables without it use . Using black plastic as a mulch has several important benefits: first, it keeps the soil a few degrees warm (and warms it up earlier in the spring), and second, it helps retain moisture. But most importantly, it almost completely eliminates weeding. Hooray! All you really have to do is cover your bed (I grow in raised beds) with this plastic and then cut holes where you want to plant your seedlings (or seeds). Warp Brothers plastic is the best I've ever used, but I would strongly recommend using 4 mil plastic for this type of work. Anything thinner is bound to break. I would use 6ml if I could afford it but it's quite expensive and 4ml seems to work great. A good product and a 10' x 25' roll will cover many gardens.
