To be honest I bought it knowing it had imperfections because it's being sold as returns or something. I wanted a recipe card holder and I love it. I didn't do anything other than sand down the edges because the hinges create a lot of room at the back for it to lean against. I don't think it can help. if the hinges are not attached to the back of the box. I think they don't, so it won't cause pinching. The boxes do have wooden knots and need some wood spatula, but they are well put together and look very solid to me. The hinges and clasp aren't great, but I don't use them often enough to be an issue.
