Small black filaments standing on edge are an economical way of capturing incident visible light, causing the pile to turn very black even in direct sunlight. I use it on my dashboard to improve driver and dashcam visibility when the sun is shining on the dashboard. When approaching a tunnel I can now see any vehicles that could be stopped in the darkness of the tunnel, which used to be an issue. And my dashcam no longer has a blurry image of the road in front of me.
