I bought this to be able to cook steaks on the patio where I can't use propane. I use a 10 inch cast iron skillet and try to get it smoking evenly throughout the pan for searing. I use the maximum heat setting. It heats up very quickly but has hot spots and then turns on and off as soon as I bring the pan to searing temperature. The steak goes from smoky to undercooked, then rekindled a minute later and reheated to smoky. It is very difficult to calculate how long it takes to cook compared to cast iron on a constant fire, like a gas stove. Tried the temp setting (450 max) and it does the same thing. Maybe mine is faulty, but maybe the thermostat is too sensitive or it can't handle the cast iron skillet getting so hot? Anyway, probably not a goalie unless I can figure out how to fire without loops for a few minutes.
