Review on πŸ“Έ Kodak Alaris S2040 Document Scanner 1025006 by Matthew Coste

PC only. No Macs. The software installation process requires a user interface update.

Kodak used to be for everyone, but now it seems only for those who have a PC. Mac owners don't need to apply. Our entire workflow is Mac based and I expected that, like similar products from Epson, this would just need to be plugged into my Mac to start working. There are no dice. And there are no drivers available that I could find to fix the problem. Then I picked up our lonely PC, a new machine from HP, and decided I'd at least try a Kodak scanner. The installation process required downloading the drivers, another download to update the firmware (both went smoothly, although the firmware installation software didn't distinguish the download process from the installation process), and then a third download for the Smart Touch. Software that would allow me to read stored documents. However, Smart Touch didn't seem to install properly. Repeated attempts to install and run the software only resulted in crickets. It doesn't matter - you can still scan using the small touchless color screen to control the scanner yourself. PDF files can then be saved and opened with a convenient web browser or Adobe software. The actual hardware is decent, the scan is fast (and scans two pages at a time) and the general build quality matches the price (although I would expect a higher quality interface at this price point). , but Kodak has to admit that many business processes use a Mac and not a PC, and the entire user interface needs to be improved in several steps. In the meantime I'll be back to see if I can try again to get Smart Touch working as other reviewers don't seem to have had similar difficulties.
