I ordered my Drinkwell Platinum thinking I could clean it without having to buy any 'special brushes' but I was wrong. After a while, when something is wet, mold or mildew will form and the lines will clog with this jelly-like dirt. It doesn't matter which dispenser you get because it will happen to anyone unless they have a built in UV lamp and 99% of those are not affordable. When I finally got frustrated enough with cleaning, these brushes made the job a lot easier because the brushes are the right size for water pipes and they thoroughly open and clean pipes. I find that a long, narrow brush is most effective and a large brush is least effective because it's cumbersome to use with a sponge on the tip. A small one will come in handy at the pump. A NOTICE. Cleaning the pump will be quicker and cleaner if you pour white vinegar while it is in hot water, up to the top of the pump but don't cover it. The vinegar destroys the dirt in the pump and greatly extends the life of the pump and increases the cleaning pressure. How to use: put the pump in hot water, add (pour in) vinegar, leave for a minute, then plug in the pump. It sizzles a little at first, that's normal. Add more vinegar until the stream goes straight up and the pump sounds steady. Rinse the pump and bowl thoroughly with fresh water until the vinegar smell is gone and reassemble. The whole process shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.
