Longer screws are needed

My car's rear view mirror has a very thick shaft. The hardware store had screws with the right threads, so we were able to install them. My rather heavy phone slides into the grips with little effort and stays where it belongs. Unfortunately, the buttons also completely cover my volume buttons. I need to make sure it's turned up loud enough so I can hear Google's instructions.
