I have a cream color and it's real cream. The only assembly required was attaching the legs, which was easy - all lined up perfectly. Looking at the underside of the chair was a reminder that you get what you pay for so don't expect more. I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but the chair is small. In other words, if you're much taller than the average person, you'll find that this chair gets cramped in that case. I can't say anything about the durability, but it looks good.
