These are great winter pants for younger kids. My daughter is 8 and tall for her age. We wanted to try to find narrower versions that are easier to walk in BUT it's still more for sledding and snow skiing than for example skiing. Although the Starchasers (both we bought and kept) are much lighter and less clumsy than the Bugaboo. For this reason, it is better if children are very active - for example, run more than lie down or slide. At the same time it's a lot less isolated and I'd rather use a scarecrow if they're going to be outside for long periods of time in very cold weather and/or just be surrounded by snow and inclement weather. If you decide to use one of these I would think about how they are used - activity level and amount of time spent outdoors - but I would really recommend using both if possible. One more note: if about 9/10 I would consider more. Ski pants, which allow for more freedom of movement and dexterity, are still Christmas story-style baggy bell-bottoms for little kids.
