Cross stitch is quite difficult for beginners. No iron, he counts the seams. I'm an adult and figured it out, but it would be difficult for an 8 year old. I also ran out of purple thread in four rows, the whole body of the bird is purple, and there is very little purple thread in the kit. Luckily I had purple thread that matched to complete the bird.
