I've been using DLP home cinema projectors for 15 years and this Optoma HZ39HDR is the first to really have had problems with early use. It's also the first projector where I could easily see rainbow artifacts. This is most noticeable when scrolling through content like media carousels in the Netflix app. However, it's not the rainbows that bother me the most. Contrasting details are somewhat smudged. This is clearly evident in the app's white subtitles and some UI elements, which look significantly less crisp than on other 1080p displays and even other 1080p projectors. I suspect they used a poor quality lens because I've never seen this problem with any other projector. There's also chromatic aberration, which is difficult to fix as the lens doesn't focus evenly across the screen. Check out the photos I uploaded. It should be a row and column of crisp white pixels with an orange curve crossing the horizontal white line. Instead, you see all sorts of spots and colors that shouldn't be there. This is usually only noticeable as a problem near the screen. If I were to buy it as a replacement for my main home theater I would have no hesitation in returning it. My much older, much smaller and actually cheaper single bulb BenQ W1070 produces a much better picture. But this is an extra projector for me that I put in my bedroom so those flaws didn't bother me because I really wanted a laser projector so I never had to change its lightbulb. The lamp will dim over time and eventually become unusable either gradually or very suddenly as it bursts and goes out. This should never happen during the lifetime of this model. I was hoping that the laser light source would turn the projector on and off much faster than incandescent bulbs, but unfortunately the start up time is 30-40 seconds, which is basically the same as any projector I've used. The shutdown time is quick, only about two seconds before the fan turns off. Another reason I chose this model was the 120Hz 1080p input support and low latency. Thankfully it didn't disappoint. It worked great without a firmware update (which I couldn't find anyway) and makes PC input more responsive than a 60Hz display.
