Review on Woods L1706 Vandal Resistant Security Light: Ceiling Mount, Silver (150W Incandescent Bulb) by Heather Lawson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

They attach to round 4 " electrical boxes, but the instructions don't explain how.

These are durable, high quality lights. I installed a couple of these on the ceiling of my garage because my kids are always throwing tennis balls and I wanted to protect the bare bulbs. I also really like the industrial look of these lamps. My only criticism is the instruction manual, which does not state that mounting to drywall ceilings and a standard 4" round electrical box requires removing the top of the light housing. This is probably obvious to the experienced electrician, but not to the novice. When I first attempted to install the light, I quickly discovered that the two screw holes were 5" apart and would not fit in a 4" round electrical box. At first I thought I'd need to buy some sort of adapter, but on closer inspection I found I had to loosen a few set screws on the inside of the top case and remove the top part that houses the cable. Fixings to show a standard 4" mount. But that fact wasn't clear to me without some tinkering. There's no information on this in the instructions, so I put more time into it than I have to admit. The electrical connections were easy and straightforward, but if you're like me and have never hung one before, be aware that the instructions don't offer much useful information, in hindsight it's clear that the top case I removed was designed to be could be bolted to masonry or a stud for security and protection from vandalism.
