Forced air is used for heating in my house. The disadvantage of such a system is that it disperses airborne dust throughout the house. However, it is assumed that dust can be filtered out. Over the years I have steadily improved the quality of the filter I use for my air heater. However, so far I haven't noticed a significant difference in my allergic reactions, which seem to start with the heating season. There are cats in my house. I've read that cat dander, the tiny dander of cat skin, is five times smaller than house dust particles. It stays in the air much longer than normal dust before settling. Because of its small size, a more efficient filter is required to extract it from the air. Up until three years ago I used many filters with mixed results. However, I then started using 3M Advanced Allergen Filters, the ones in the blue packaging. They have a 3M microparticle performance rating of 1500 and a MERV rating of 12. MERV stands for the minimum reported efficiency rating from a test developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). A higher MERV rating indicates better filter performance. 3M uses particle size data from 0.3 to 1.0 microns to calculate a Microparticle Performance Rating, or MPR. The higher the MPR, the better the filter. However, higher rated filters cost more. Some of the Filtrete filters offered by 3M are: Dust and Pollen Filter, Particulate Efficiency Rating 600, MERV Rating 8 Micro Allergen Filter, Particulate Efficiency Rating 1000, MERV Rating 11 Ultra Allergen Filter, Particulate Efficiency Rating 1250, MERV Rating 11, Advanced Allergen Filter, Particle Efficiency Class 1500, MERV Class 12, Maximum Allergen Filter, Particle Efficiency Class 1900, MERV Class 13. The difference provided by the advanced filter was immediately apparent. My runny nose stopped flowing. My guess is that the new improved filters should remove more dust from the air, including cat dander. I did not notice any change in the speed of the circulating air. I recently started using the newer Ultimate filter. It works better than advanced filters. The extra cost of a filter is worth it if you have allergies or pets. However, if you are happy with a filter with a lower rating and lower cost, keep using it. I suggest you check Revain and the suppliers online to get the best price.
