I've seen Mitutoyo sell this 4" caliper offers. Big! I'm only measuring a few inches or less, right? It will be perfect and more compact. And this Mitutoyo just needs to be more accurate and consistent than the $19 digital calipers I buy from a local Chinese tool importer. I wasn't wrong: Mitutoyo is a beautiful thing. If you pick up a 4 inch model, open its jaws two inches and hold it, you'll find that the rod now ends up digging into the palm of my hand. And believe me, the edges are perfectly smooth. Sharp even. A 6 inch model would hang on my arm. 4 inch model, oh. But I will survive. What I like about this Mitutoya is that it never forgets where it is. I always feel like with cheap digital calipers I have to reset them every time or the readings are wrong. Not so with this Mitutoyo. (In fact, I've reverted to analog calipers simply because they're constant.) However, there's a reason most calipers open to 6 inches: That length is just right for holding in your hand for most measurements. However, this Mitutoya - even the 4 inch model - is beautiful.
