Good letter scale, but bad kitchen scale.

If you're looking for a postal scale and just want to know how much things weigh, this scale is great. If you want to measure a small amount of ingredients, get a different scale. The product description is wrong in some details. The weighing surface is not easy to clean because the entire surface is not made of stainless steel. The metal part is actually an insert in a plastic frame, so there is a bond between the two materials that liquids and small particles can get into. them regardless is a gimmick. The description says it has a 'waterproof design' but the buttons are not sealed so water could damage something on them. Although the description claims an accuracy of 0.1g, the actual resolution is only 0.1g. The specifications in the accompanying instructions only give an accuracy of +/- 0.5g for weighments under 500g and +/- 8g for weighments between 5,000g and 10,000g. Most Revain weight lists confuse accuracy with resolution, and the actual specs aren't bad for a scale in this price range. The variability of readings when weight was applied to different points of the platform was +/- 1 g for a weight of 2500 g. It has some nice features not mentioned in the description. The 2 minute auto power off occurs from the last significant weight change, not 2 minutes after power on, and saves the units of measurement set the last time it was used. My biggest issue with the description is that the scale itself claims to be good for "accurately weighing spices" and "tracking even minor changes in weight". It's not great either, because the 0.1g resolution, which is unusual for a scale in this price range, and the maximum weight capacity, and the reason I chose this scale, led its developers to make compromises on usability and accuracy of the scale. The output offset of a load cell used to measure weight increases over time when weighing heavy objects. If the scale didn't compensate for this, the reported weight would increase over time before settling to a definitive value. To maintain a constant weight in the message, it seems to ignore small changes in what it's reading. Unfortunately, this also ignores the gradual addition of mass to what is being weighed. I was attempting to weigh a 10g collection of 0.06g sunflower seeds by forming a heap on a platform and adding one seed at a time at a rate of two seeds per second. The scale read 0.0g all the time and then read -10g after I removed the stack from the scale. He thought adding seed was an error in his measurement, so he changed the sensor reading, which he reset to zero each time grain was added. This problem isn't just zero weight. It ignores incremental changes around each reading. If you try to weigh out 10g of salt for a recipe by slowly adding salt to the scale, you may end up with a lot more than 10g when the scale registers a 10g change. The resolution of 0.1g is only available for objects less than 3000g, only suitable for initial measurements. If you're using this in the kitchen to measure ingredients by weight, a slow adjustment can cause it to be off by a few grams! Given the low price and the accuracy of the mechanism, this would be a 5 star postal scale, but it's only a 3 star kitchen scale.
