I waited a little over two months after purchasing this radio before posting a review to give a good break time to base my opinion on to have. In short, I am very happy with the radio and will soon be purchasing a second AnyTone Dual Band AT-5888UV. I was initially hesitant to purchase the radio after reading some of the reviews, but the radio has worked flawlessly so far. Transmissions have been made at all power levels to both near and far repeaters and have also been used on the VHF simplex but have not yet been used on the UHF simplex. What I like about the walkie-talkie: - Price - For VHF/UHF, 50W capable transceivers I don't think you will find a better deal - Frequency coverage - Exceptional VHF/UHF coverage outside of ham radio frequencies - Performance - 4 easy to select Bands 50W available power facilitate the operation of remote repeaters or simplex operations. - Remote Head - The ability to remove the control head from the transceiver for increased mounting flexibility is a real plus. - Standard Connection - The radio uses inexpensive standard Cat-5 cable options to connect the microphone and remote control head, not proprietary. - Programming - Chirp version software available in addition to the proprietary software supplied with the radio - USB cable. The cable came with this seller's radio and did not need to be purchased separately - R Receiver Sensitivity - Exceptional receiver, better than my IC-706MKIIG VHF/UHF receiver. What I don't like about this radio: - Slow scan - When you have programmed a large number of frequencies it becomes slow. It is best to choose "skip" options for non-priority frequencies to be scanned. - Lightweight plastic - The radio has no "loud radio" quality in its detachable control head while the body construction is fine. Doesn't change the rules of the game. Speakers - Must be programmed to enable this feature, not just plug and play. Range of repeaters and mountaintop digital control channels for public safety, commercial, telephone, long distance/digital and cellular systems. Only two frequencies that I programmed into the AT-5888UV showed this type of interference. One was FRS channel 3 and the other was the MURS frequency. Both were mobile and only a few hundred meters away from the transmitters. I have no problems with this radio. It was a real pleasure to work with this radio station. In combination with the Comet CA-2X4SRB mobile antenna, this is an almost ideal setup if you need to use it on different frequencies. This is a 'workable' combination for volunteer firefighters, rural public safety, search and rescue needs, storm monitoring communications and public services, especially on tight budgets, providing flexible frequency coverage for gmrs/frs/murs etc etc when required. For those of us who don't have the money to afford one of the "loud" radios, the AnyTone AT-5888UV offers budget-conscious consumers excellent value and a very powerful VHF/UHF transceiver for the money .
