This MUTUATCOR magnet is listed as a 400 pound magnet. Is it really 400 pounds? Or should you buy a bigger more expensive magnet?Well thats exactly what I wanted to know with my simple basic testing. So I walked around my shop and found a couple things. Hammer. Check. Pliers. Check. Screw driver, CHECK. All stuck hard and fast. Had to forceably pry them off. Delongi Oil Filled Radiator Heater. OK Houston we have a problem. It wouldn't pick it up. So I examined the heater and found a round spot on the end that was completely flat, and tried again. Nope. Still wouldn't pick it up. Why? It certainly didn't weigh 400 pounds. Ok it has to do with metal DENSITY. With that new info in mind, I tested several other items. One was a propane tank. Wouldn't pick that up either, and again, it weighed far less. Then I took it downstairs where I had an extra receiver hitch laying awaiting an install. FINALLY! I picked it right up. Now it wasn't easy, as the hitch was long, and heavy, and it was quite difficult to lift due to its size and having to stretch out my arms away from my body to lift it. But it did. It also pulled a muscle in my back. But i did get the hitch off the ground. I figure the hitch weighs 60 pounds or so. So will it lift 400 pounds? Well. let me rephrase that question. Can YOU lift 400 pounds? Im sure I could if I had to, but that isn't recreation to me! (Yes I avoid gyms. I work for a living!)So my grand finale hypothesis is as follows. WHO CARES what the weight is? Im looking for the same things as the rest of us. G u n s, knives, fishing gear (i dont even fish.) and tools. Maybe the occasional bicycle. Will it lift them? YES. (bicycle maybe). With this new info, anything in the water that weighs 400 pounds CAN FRIGGIN STAY THERE for all I care. Im after little things, and while a stronger magnet WILL keep said smaller items on the magnet better during retrieval, it also will have a much higher chance of resulting in a lost magnet when it sticks to the side of the bridge. So as far as Im concerned, smaller is, to an extent, better. I save money. I find what I want, and I leave the abandoned car on the bottom where it belongs. AND I KEEP USING MY MAGNET.That said this is a really great kit. It even includes a grappeling hook, which I used yesterday when i got my rope stuck on a piece of fence that was attached to the side of the bridge. I wrestled for over 20 minutes with the rope and magnet and fence till my wife walks up with the grappeling hook. With a little steadyness I managed to hook the rope, pull it up, and that relieved the weight on the rope which allowed me to untangle it and retrieve it all. WHEW!Another thing ill point out is that this kit includes glue to glue the post to the magnet. As a person who lost his very 1st magnet on the 3rd throw BECAUSE he didn't glue the threads, I appreciate that. HOWEVER, my magnet I received from them was already glued very tight. I literally couldn't unscrew the post from the magnet. So I just ran a bead all around the threads and let that dry.If this review was amusing, thought provoking, or made you laugh, PLEASE click that little HELPFUL button beside the review!
