I expected the smell of wet wool, like washing a wool sweater, to come out when using steam. I kept seeing friends using steam irons on their wool mats and videos of instructors doing the same, all with no problems. There were no instructions not to use steam on this mat. However, when I was steam ironing two small face masks, I smelled rancid food so strong it penetrated the masks I was ironing (which I had to rewash). I left the pad in the garage for a week but the horribly strong smell was still there. I then tried soaking the pad in Woolite and baking soda and rinsing it out ten times. I then left it outside in the sun during the day. That night I put it on a rack in my dryer that I use for tennis shoes to keep them from falling off and timed it for 1.5 hours to dry on high. The next day I hung it up in my garage. It has been hanging there ever since β more than seven days. It still stinks. UPDATE: I left it alone for a few months and then used it without steam. The awful smell has carried over to my sewing project again. Leaving my project outside for three days didn't get rid of the smell - I had to wash it. The carpet goes in the trash as it is too late to return it.
