I recently bought a new AV Receiver and noticed how hot it gets after a broadcast. So I figured for durability I'd put a fan on top to dissipate the heat. The good news is that this thing seems to be moving a lot of air through the receiver and I think it should keep the electronics cool and hopefully for a (er) long time. There are multiple modes of operation available on the fan and I chose Smart mode. This allows the device to turn itself on and off automatically, and the fan speed will increase or decrease depending on how much heat is being felt by the receiver. So far, so good. A bit noisy when running above half speed during quiet TV moments, but you get used to it. However, one thing it does: when the room temperature rises, the fan turns on, even if the receiver is off and at ambient temperature. When our home theater room isn't in use I let the AC temp rise to conserve power and occasionally going up there I noticed the fans were running. There's no way to adjust the switch-on temperature setting and it doesn't seem to recognize the room temperature. So I have to turn off the device when I'm not using the room and then remember to switch it to smart mode when I go watch TV. I think they offer a high end unit with adjustable temperature settings, but I didn't want to spend more than I did, especially on something I've never used before. In general I like the quiet when my hot electronics cool down and would recommend this type of device if you have a device that generates a lot of heat.
