Update shocked! Connected directly to my Acer Aspire One netbook. Lubuntu Linux, Puppy Linux, and Linux Mint bootable USB saw and used the full 8GB. This reduced battery life by about 15%, but given that this is a utility machine, it's not a big deal. I've been using this update for about 3 months now and haven't had any memory issues. I use this netbook every day as my primary personal device. I'm currently using Linux Mint Qiana (17) with Xfce as my main desktop and KDE Plasma 5 as an alternative. (This machine runs on an AMD C-50 processor, or I would use KDE as the primary.) Xfce runs Firefox (always at least five tabs loaded), GIMP, Libre Office, Widelands, Inkscape, Photowall, Variety wallpapers. Changer, Google Earth, SketchUp (in WINE), IDLE development environment with Python and many games.
