Review on Aluminum MicroSD Adapter MacBook Non Retina by Sean Purnomo

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Excellent product that met all expectations

Product works as advertised. But a few tips for a flawless experience: 1.) BaseQi makes different adapters for different computers. Not suitable for everyone. So this product works with 13" Airs but NOT with 11" Airs, Surfacebook or others. You must read VERY carefully and choose accordingly. Basically, the product sits neatly and discreetly on my early 2015 13-inch MacBook Air. And it's pleasing to the eye (ie, looks good) 2.) Some 'negative reviews' say the product can burn MicroSD . It's hard to believe, just in case I tested it first with some known good MicroSD cards I don't need (2GB) with AJA System Test. They know you have microSD cards like the ones you find between sofa cushions. 3.) All of this testing also meant I had to plug and unplug a few times. The "tool-less" mechanism works as advertised (all I need is a fingernail, but YMMV). 4.) I used it along with a 200GB U-3 microSD to transfer my entire Steam collection and used a symlink. This is important because if there were any instabilities (i.e. the addpater went offline) the symlink would break, which it didn't. Note that I didn't move the car, but it seems stable. All in all, a quick and easy way to add storage without paying the high price Apple charges for its PCI-e SSD. Note, however, that even if you use one of the future V60 or V90 cards currently in development, it will still be slower than the onboard memory. Especially for typing. So it's best to write the data here once, read a lot. Or write little, read a lot (e.g. Steamgames ;-) ). Update late July 2017: When the laptop goes to sleep, the SD card is disabled. I believe this is more of an issue with the OSX/MicroSD card combo than an issue with the per-se adapter. Removing and reinstalling the adapter solves all problems, and since it's a tool-less adapter, it's pretty easy. If you get a different microSD card (or an OSX update magically works), it might not affect you. Still a great product.

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Useless features
