Both the sponge filter and the cartridge filter are lightweight, and the sponge filter is easy to clean. The cartridge filter has some small built in charcoal pellets if you prefer to use charcoal with your aquarium setup. The thin sponge built into the cartridge can be removed when you want to take it out. Both items are easily removed for replacement and maintenance, although the thicker self-contained foam filter is a bit more difficult to clean or remove, as it's a little harder for me with gloves to grab to be able to remove it from the case inside the surge protector .
