Pieces are great for wild birds. I hope they can pick what they need.

In spring I add oyster shells to wild bird feeders. How Birds Think About Their Favorite Food; the rest of the contents fall to the ground. This includes this calcium, which helps with strong eggshells. More birds feed on fallen things than feeders. Quail, Junko and other large birds always feed off the ground and will take whatever falls off the feeders. Many of the birds are finches and other small birds that oversize these oyster chips without pecking them into small pieces.
