For filtering sediment and chlorine

We pump our own water from a well-known lake in upstate New York that has always been known for its clarity and cleanliness. However, we filter and chlorinate because algae and sediment from high winds and rain increase the likelihood of bacterial contamination. We have a tiered system. The first stage is a washable 50 micron sediment pre-filter that prevents large particles from clogging the system. The second stage is chlorination and a 500 gallon storage tank. The third stage is the Ecopure filter, which effectively removes all sediment and most, but not all, chlorine flavors and odors. To do this, we still need to use the "Finish" filters in the fridge and on the kitchen faucet. Unfortunately, I have not found a whole house filter that is as effective as kitchen sink and refrigerator filters at completely eliminating the chlorine aftertaste. This is the most effective I've found. It purifies water well enough to use for washing dishes and clothes, but it's not 100 percent effective at eliminating chlorine aftertaste. I have found that I have to change it every 3-4 months. If I leave it in our system longer, the water pressure drops. I would be interested to know who gets 6 months in real life.

Pros
  • This premium water filter is NSF certified to reduce the taste and odor of chlorine, sediment, sand, silt, dirt and rust. Designed for use in municipal or well water systems
Cons
  • Out of fashion
