The wood seems sturdy and durable. This shelf seems great! Instructions were missing from the package, but I figured it out. The reply to my concern was addressed fairly quickly after I figured out the correct contact method to use (email). The self looks great on my desk and it holds quite a lot of books. The wood grain detail does not appear real, though it is probably real wood. The outermost area is made of that laminated looking material. For the cost, that's to be expected. i've seen $350 desks at office max made of this same material. Despite the laminated outer core, the wood itself is actually thick and durable. I am pleased with my purchase.
