To measure the load current drawn by a cord plugged into a standard 120V AC outlet, an in-line splitter can be used to attach a clamp to an ammeter can use to get a reading. I chose the Tekpower M920 AC Line Splitter because it looked solid, had two gauge holes, and was inexpensive. The hole at the end of the plug delivers the actual rated current (1X). For greater accuracy, the second hole delivers 10x the current (10X). Depending on the sensitivity of your meter, you may get more accurate readings. For example, you can read 0.4 amps at 1X open and 0.43 amps at 10X. The build quality is excellent, and the orange color makes it more noticeable and hopefully less likely. The holes are large enough to be easily accessible with most standard clamps. If you want to measure how much current a device with a 120 volt plug or socket draws, this tool makes it possible.
