USB playback freezes after 18 months of light use. DVD/CD Playback OK

The Panasonic S500 DVD player with USB connection has been working properly for 18 months. My main use is to play music and audio files through the USB port through an A/V amp. Two months ago, USB media playback froze and neither the remote control worked nor the manual power button on the DVD player. I had to unplug the DVD player to get it working again. This happens with several different SanDisk USB sticks that have previously worked with this device. The DVD works perfectly, but that's not what I bought this unit for. It has been little used and is protected by a quality surge arrester. The same memory cards work fine with the USB port of my Samsung DVD player. I would not buy this block again. For those who just want to use DVD/CD, you will be fine. I expect electronic devices to last longer than 18 months. The Sony 5.1 A/V player is over 10 years old and much more complex but works great.
