I used this CF card to convert my 30GB iPod 5th Gen into a solid state drive. It works. And I have 2GB of extra space to boot. How did you do that? I won't go into detail here. There is a lot of information on the internet. To do this, however, you must open the hood of your iPod. If you made your own battery you should be able to do the conversion. The price of these CF cards is finally coming down and the Komputerbay card is one of the cheapest. Not always good because sometimes you get what you pay for, but mine has worked quite well so far. Only time will tell its true durability. To complete the conversion you need to rate the adapter listed on the seller page below where the "combinations" are listed. but for less than $40, you can bring your iPod back from the dead and dying category. And with replacement hard drives for those classic iPods in the $60+ category, it's a bargain. The *big* benefit of the switch is battery life. The battery no longer needs to power the mechanical hard drive (essentially a small electric motor). With the change, you reduce the power consumption of the battery considerably. Even the weak battery that Apple has built into these new iPods can power this transformation for what feels like an eternity. You also save weight. The redesigned 5th generation iPod is lighter. you can feel it And a CF card can withstand much rougher treatment than an old hard drive. The card is said to be faster, but I can't fully confirm that. It doesn't seem to make much of a difference in boot times that I can tell. So this CF card (and its adapter) is a great deal for those of us who still enjoy vintage 5th generation iPods. And anyone in the know knows that those old 5th generation dinosaurs had the best sound because they had better D/A converters. So give them new life.
