Polished Poop in Computers & Accessories

I like the aluminum case. This was my second Fantom hard drive. It crashed almost immediately without even completing my first backup. The drive started to slow down and click more and more. I opened up my first Fantom hard drive (bought over 1 year ago) and found a Toshiba hard drive clearly marked as 'Refurbished'. This tells me that Fantom will probably buy a lot of refurbished drives for pennies, put them in a fancy aluminum case and sell them as "new". Without getting into the ethics of this practice, it should be noted, if only in relation to data retention. I believe most people who buy external drives do so for backup purposes. In terms of the effectiveness of this drive's ability to hold data (or lack thereof), my experience is that these drives fail almost instantly more than they work. I traded this drive in for a replacement drive on a Revain exchange and the replacement drive failed almost immediately. When formatting for the ext4 file system, I didn't finish it. Towards the end of the ride it started to sparkle and the progress almost came to a halt. I decided to return it, buy a new Seagate hard drive, and reuse the enclosure from my first Fantom hard drive. I really like fences. I bet the USB/SATA interface inside the cases is also in perfect working order. But the real discs are in, well, you could say it's a polished turd.
