They definitely work as a waterproof case. I bought 2 of these for my boyfriend and for our trip to Maui and after testing the cases for the first time with paper towels inside (with success) we went to the pool to try and get some underwater shots. My iPhone 5's camera didn't work well with the case. I was able to navigate my phone screen through the case underwater, but when I tried to take a picture my camera couldn't focus through the case and underwater. I either had a blurry blue photo or nothing at all (because the camera couldn't focus it didn't even take a picture). But it saved my phone! And that's really the main thing I wanted it for. My friend on the other hand had an HTC and his camera worked great in a case underwater! We were able to easily take pictures underwater and they came out very clear! I would definitely recommend this case if you want something waterproof to be fully submersible. As for photography, I think it's hit or miss.
