We used to have a full-featured, more reliable Uniden radio; We reviewed two of them as the first one failed a few years after installation. We had a WHAM which, as stated in the manual, worked with the newer UNIDEN VHF models; it still works and I preferred that feature. We screwed up a lot with our previous radio, which had a much more efficient in-mic interface (and not coincidentally had a speaker, so in noisy environments - common onboard - I could hold the mic close to my ear and hear the gearing clearly ) as well as other features not found in this cheap basement model. However, it works as it should and transmits and receives reliably with the same antenna as before. a gift for the previous radio. If there was a replacement for the original, I would buy it. But I bought this because I used to be happy with the Uniden devices. It wasn't plug and play for our setup as the previous radio was larger, but it fit snugly into the previous side flush mounting hole and the mounting hardware worked the same way. Good bargain buy. However, if you use it a lot (often during the day) then you probably need a radio with more features.
