The workstation is: 2 x E5-2650 2GHz with hyperthreading - 32 cores 64 GB RAM 2 x GTX Titans Working with conventional software: Actually, the plus of multi-core is that everything that was not originally created to eat all the cores in the system can be run in any amount at the same time and there will be no difference at all, as if nothing was running. You just learn how to close programs after use. Everything always flies. But - there is a small minus. A frequency of 2 GHz makes two xeons in some cases 1.5 times slower than the Core i5 @ 3GHz for 5 thousand. This is especially noticeable in single-threaded applications. Games. Games stupidly fly everything and always. The low frequency in this case does not greatly affect, because games can somehow blur through the cores, but here there is complete freedom in this matter. 2-4 cores are loaded + one more slightly raises the load. Xeons are not needed for games, it is better to take i7 and more video cards instead. For games, a video card is much more important than 8 or 16 cores in a processor. Working with sharpened software: Sharpened here means software that always eats all the cores and uses all sorts of virtualizations. There is 3ds Max and, suddenly, ABBY FineReader. With the first one, everything is simple - the speed of max on two xeons is approximately one and a half times higher than the top i7 for 2022 (if I was not mistaken with the year, i7 without any overclocking). FineReader has an interesting feature of recognizing each page of text in a separate process, and creating as many of these processes as there are cores. Here everything becomes immediately noticeable - the speed grows linearly. Virtualization - here I didnโt notice much difference, I can only say that virtual machines can be opened a lot and they donโt interfere. However, this is largely due simply to the number of CPU cores and, of course, RAM. General remarks: Of course, 2 GHz sometimes interferes, but they have a definite plus - the computer turned out to be moderately quiet for its power. I also want to note the stability of the system, but it's not just about the prots. No BSODs.
