The first day I spent 4 hours doing this work. Then I read in one of the reviews that it was necessary to update the firmware. I have emailed Motorola Technical Support (you can find the email address in the manual) to ask how to get the firmware update. They replied the next morning. Everything worked (with a few resets and deleting old saved settings) in just 10 minutes. For Centurylink customers using IPoE protocol (not PPPoE protocol): 1. Before purchasing, contact CL (Centerlink) to ask: - Do you have VDSL or ADSL? I have VDSL2. Also ask if you have an associated VDSL (if so, this modem is not for you). Also ask what protocol you are using. I have IPO. If your protocol is PPPoE, ask for a PPP.2 username and password. At this point you can try setting up the new MD1600 yourself. It should automatically detect your internet settings (the screen will ask you to wait about 2 minutes). If it works for you, fine. If not.3. Get a firmware update from Motorola. They gave me a link to their website. If you search for MD1600, you can also find the software update link. Be sure to read the attached How to PDF file.4. Installation cleanup failed: I followed the instructions to install new software. However, it didn't work for me the first time. I need to delete all previously saved WAN and LAN settings, VDSL interface, ADSL interface first. These settings are saved automatically when you try to set up a new modem. Click "Advanced" button, go to "Advanced Settings". Then click on the Layer2 interface. delete all entries there. Do the same for VDSL interface, ADSL interface, WAN service and LAN.5. Reboot (or unplug) the modem. Again go to setupmyrouter.net etc. This time the modem should try to find your internet settings with a clean setup with the new firmware update. (The screen should tell you it will take about 2 minutes.) Viola! Note that I didn't need a PPP username and password since CL is IPoE and not PPPoE in my region. My modem didn't try to detect my internet settings. I think it might be a return? I have no idea, but the modem itself looks new. I wish Motorola would just put a note or sticker in the box to say so. Hello, you need a firmware update. Or just add a note here in the Amazon product description or on their website. Many disappointments could have been avoided. Installing Actiontec was a breeze. Netgear was more painful. As for the performance of the Internet and Wi-Fi. better than my Jurassic Actiontec C1000A. No more wifi drops. If you have children, you know how important it is to keep the house quiet. Hope that helps.
