Review on Ergodyne N Ferno 6970 Balaclava Exchanger by Greg Birchfield

Works great but there is condensation dripping

I bought this to wear during winter cycling. When the temperature is 20F or higher I wear a regular balaclava, but when the temperature drops below 20F I need something warmer. The heat exchanger works wonders. I used this today when the air temperature was -9°F (-28°F with wind chill index). I put my ski goggles on over the N-Ferno 6970 and tucked the balaclava collar into my ski jacket. With this outfit combo I had no exposed skin and was able to see and breathe perfectly. When cycling I have a lot of strength and panted at times (via ferratas). The heat exchanger heated and humidified the air so my lungs never felt like they were being blown by cold air (the weather was reported on the radio to prevent people from taking deep breaths and to minimize talking when going outside today have to). The ONLY thing I didn't like was that some of the moisture from my breath condensed and dripped off the mask. This is really a minor issue and I don't think there is a way to avoid it. I recommend this mask to anyone who drives or works outside in extreme cold.

Pros
  • Hard wearing finish
Cons
  • Safety
