Alienware m17 R4 17.3 inch non-touch gaming laptop. This is for the 16GB RAM version, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 6GB GDDR6 and Intel Core i7-10870H Initial review on April 24, 2021. I think of the consumer laptop market in three categories. 1) Inexpensive, slow, good for communication networks, document creation, spreadsheets, photo editing, not for gaming. 2) The middle part of the spectrum, fast enough, light, thin, long battery life, quiet. A good handy computer that can be used for some games, photo and video editing. 3) Powerful, Gaming, Big, Heavy, Hot, Loud, Expandable, Short Battery Life. This 17-inch Alienware clearly falls into the latter category. This computer can also be a good choice for extensive video editing. This laptop can handle the most complex gaming programs. .You can order upgraded versions that have more RAM, faster processors, and faster GPUs. you decide. For me this is more than I need. This laptop is so powerful that it's almost on par with my fairly powerful desktop computer. My desktop also has an 8-core Intel Core i7 processor, 32GB of RAM, SSDs, and a decent GPU. The advantage of this laptop is that it takes up much less space than a desktop in a portable case. The first thing I did with this Alienware laptop after going through a typical Windows 10 setup was to download 170GB of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 files. This program configures itself according to the capabilities of the hardware. On my desktop, most of the MFS2020 settings are set to HIGH, and this laptop was fast enough. The program also sets the parameters to HIGH AI with a frame rate of 60 fps. We have five laptops in the house and this is the only one that can handle graphics intensive programs like MFS2020. Pros: Very powerful GPU with 6GB of local RAM. It's not the fastest Nvidia GPU, but it's close to the best in terms of performance. This is the newest class of GPU engines in the $400 range for the GPU alone. By the way, the same laptop can be ordered with more powerful GPUs and options to increase local RAM. Running graphics-intensive games generates a lot of heat. Alienware has quite a bit of information on this laptop's cooling technology. This helps account for the weight (over 5lbs) and I believe the thickness of this laptop. cooling and noise. While the fans seem to be running most of the time, the sound is smooth, not raspy. I don't find that offensive.- 10th gen Intel Core i7-10870H. Several things come together to make a fast gaming PC. One is the CPU, then a fast M2 SSD, GPU, BUSS interfaces and an SSD for large data storage. I believe that the majority of tasks are assigned to the GPU, which is where we should be spending the most money. The CPU can certainly be the bottleneck if it's too slow, but this one is fast. It's not the fastest Intel i7, but that's not necessarily because the GPU does most of the work. It is listed as HIGH END on cpubenchmark.net. - WiFi 6. It turns out that my new router supports WiFi 6, so this is the first piece of hardware that can actually take advantage of this faster WiFi system. If you have fast internet service, the next bottleneck will be your gaming laptop's wireless connection. WiFi 6 is significantly faster than all previous WiFi generations. Bluetooth enabled. My desktop doesn't have Bluetooth, so I had to use a dongle for this feature. It's nice not to burn the USB connector for this feature. - 16GB of memory. My desktop is 32GB, but I've found that the computer doesn't really run that much faster with the additional 16GB of RAM. I don't intend to upgrade the RAM. - Built-in front camera and microphone - Decent backlit keyboard, thankfully. - Speakers that actually sound good for a laptop. When I play games I usually use headphones. Thunderbolt/USB-C. This single port supports not only USB-C but also Thunderbolt speeds. Very fast - lightning. You can actually buy affordable external GPUs that connect to this laptop via the Thunderbolt port. The keyboard surface is made of plastic, feels comfortable and does not attract fingerprints. With a laptop this big, the keyboard can be full size. This is a beautiful laptop with a colored backlit keyboard and other accents on the body. Cons: - If you're looking for the fastest gaming laptop possible, check out the other options available for this laptop, including more RAM, better GPUs, and a faster processor. - Short battery life. about 2 hours. You must bring an AC adapter. The 240W AC power supply is huge and heavy at 9 x 4 x 1 inches. Expensive. Like most gaming laptops, but this one seems about 10% larger. "Upgrading RAM? Stuck at 16GB because the RAM is soldered to the motherboard. I didn't open the back panel to verify this fact. I've seen conflicting comments online about upgrading the RAM. Some say there are two Slots for RAM are things I wish this laptop was aware of when I ordered this computer so they are not part of my rating in terms of star rating does not have a touchscreen, it is almost standard on laptops, tablets, phones these days and even desktops I just don't get it and it's one of the things I miss the most Keyboard without 10 keys I don't use 10 keys and this results in the main part of the keyboard not being centered on the screen Can I Recommend this laptop? If you really want better graphics I strongly recommend you to buy this laptop but in a different version that has a faster process ssor, has more RAM and a faster GPU.
