Replacement Update!

Media could not be loaded. Original review with update below. First of all, I didn't buy this wet grinder for fine grinding my tools. So I didn't expect a comparison with Tormek. But I didn't expect it to be this bad. First I noticed the stains on the stone wheel. They have a rubber base and leave little balls on the wheel. This prevents me from getting a smooth edge on my tool. In addition, the wheel shaft does not run true, which causes a noticeable vibration. This can be corrected with a diamond grinding wheel. But not on mine because of the rubber-based pads. However, the reason for the return is the motor drive of the elliptical gear. We don't have a spare part for that. So Wen Tek told me to send it back. They would send me a new bike, but what's the point. Therefore, I give Wen's technical department a gold star for excellent service. I also ordered a wet coffee grinder. I will update after testing it. PS Tormek accessories work on a handpiece. Rims also fit, but the concentricity is not suitable for diamond discs. Update: The return was hassle-free via Revain. The next is better than the first. The ceremony still required a lot of work. The geared motor is roughly machined. After the first test run, metal shavings remained which, if not removed, would have damaged the nylon gear. I cleaned and sanded the gear to a smooth finish. Then I applied white lithium grease. It's quiet now. Unfortunately, it's still not a very good sharpener. It will reshape your tools, but don't rely on that wet grinder to sharpen the edge. The rock just isn't small enough. The instructions recommend smoothing and leveling the circle. You need to buy a diamond tool. Tormek TT-50 ($93) is suitable for a handpiece. You will also need a Tormek SP-650 Grader ($33.95). I tried using waterstones at duel level for rating. It didn't work as well as the SP-650. To get a sharp edge, you need a smaller stone. Tormek SJ-250 ($401.00) fits this machine. Now that it's set up and working fine, I'm just not very happy. In order to use it I had to purchase individual items according to the instructions. The assistant is also a problem. It's hard to set up. As it moves, it loses its parallel with the rock you just adjusted to. The water trough is difficult to remove after sharpening. It also doesn't sit under the stone so I have to put a rag underneath to keep it from dripping. The stone will not hold its graded grit. When rough work is appreciated, it gets better. When judged for subtlety, it gets rougher. The washers were not tight against the stone. I had to flatten them or risk breaking the stone. And as mentioned, I had to tune the gearbox, otherwise it wears out prematurely and fails. If you only use it for sharpening lawnmower blades and chisels that you hit with a hammer, you'll most likely be happy. A wet grinder and the items needed to use it cost about $250. My two star rating compares it to tasks I would use it for. Since handguard accuracy is not consistent, I cannot give it three stars. Yes, that's a low price compared to Tormek. But this is a wet stone mill. So he's in the same category. I keep it and use it as a grinder.

Pros
  • 115 rpm for maximum sharpness accuracy
Cons
  • Ugly packaging
