Review on πŸ“€ Enhanced Panasonic DMR-ES15S DVD Recorder with Progressive Scan by Dean Pinheiro

Very important! on DVD players and recorders

I recently purchased this player through Revain but from a source that offered a lower price (cabo-wabo, $139). It took two calls to Panasonic to hook up the unit to my Direct TV receiver and TV. I'm not very good with these diagrams, and the first tech I spoke to obviously wasn't either. Navigating the three remotes (Sony TV, Direct TV and Panasonic's DVD recorder) is awkward at first and still awkward once you've gotten the sequence. I guess there's no getting around that since the inputs are different and I'd rather turn off the recorder than get a TV signal through it. However, using the recorder is quite simple. You need to format the DVD (takes about a minute) and it takes a single button press to burn what you're watching. I used Memorex DVD +RW discs. Timed recording is limited to the first 135 channels - if I remember the number correctly, so if you want to record something on a higher channel you should watch it, or at least turn it on. After burning, you have the option to make the DVD playable on other DVD players. Takes about 3 minutes. In 2-hour recording mode, the recording quality is excellent. I have confirmed that the recording can be played on another player. I also watched the commercial DVD movie with no problems. I haven't tried time tracking and haven't used the device to play MP3 or view JPEG. It can do more than just record and play TV programs. All in all, after connecting and understanding your remotes, this is a great product for the price. Overall I think Panasonic's customer service is very good.

Pros
  • FireWire port for direct dubbing to camcorder
Cons
  • Operating speed
