After reading a few reviews I had to post this. Algone is a great product that will REDUCE your nitrate levels and WILL HELP purify your water. what, as they say; If your nitrate levels are off the charts (above 80ppm) then this is not a panacea for you and there are likely other issues with your tank and/or facility. It could be overcrowding (reduce the number of fish or buy a larger tank), overfeeding, or not doing water changes. Look, no one LOVES doing water changes, but even with Algon, you SHOULD do water changes. Would you like to reuse the same bath water every day? No . The same goes for your fish. If your Algon pack has developed a thick layer of "slime" and/or slime, it means your water is gross and needs to be replaced - Algon will NOT fix this. In order to lower nitrate levels, Algon removes a lot of waste and other pollutants such as proteins, carbohydrates and fats. When present in HIGH amounts, mucus builds up. You need to change the water and clean the aquarium. You may also need to clean/replace the filter more frequently OR your current filter is not efficient enough to handle the biological load in your aquarium. You must also stop taking bacterial supplements while Algon is working, as this will make the situation worse. and prevent improvement. Make sure your tank and surface agitation have adequate O2 levels. Depending on what deposits are in your tank, the bag may give off an odor.
