Unlike many other manufacturers of compostable/biodegradable bin liners, this particular manufacturer explicitly states the thickness of these liners as 0.85 mil. That's the same density as a hefty 0.9 mil plastic garbage bag. These bags are flexible but not enough to stretch. AGAINST 1. No lace.2. They are opaque rather than clear, which is required by many municipal waste management companies.3. The cost is quite high, although it is quite comparable to other compostable bin liners. BAGS DENSITY INFORMATION It seems counterintuitive (to me at least) that "low density” garbage bags are thicker and stronger than "high density” garbage bags. LOW DENSITY . Low density garbage bags are tear and puncture resistant because they are flexible and thick. They are measured in MIL, which is one thousandth (0.001) of an inch. The higher the MIL number, the thicker the bag. A standard kitchen garbage bag weighs 0.9 mils. A typical "strong" or "heavy duty" plastic garbage bag weighs 1.05 mils. The thickest bags of all are contractor bags, weighing up to 6.0 mils. The low density of about 0.9 MIL is said to enable handling of sharp, jagged and irregularly shaped objects without punctures or tears. But let's face it, broken glass or the sharp edges of a can lid, if pushed hard enough against the edges of a 0.9 MIL pouch, can definitely rip it apart, no matter the brand. HIGH DENSITY. High density bags are thinner and more economical than low density bags. They are measured in microns, which is one thousandth (0.001) millimeter. Because they contain less plastic or, in the case of biodegradable bags, less non-plastic materials from which they are made, they are more prone to being punctured and torn by sharp, jagged, and irregularly shaped objects. However, they are capable of hauling heavy loads of soft items such as clothing, towels, shredded paper, toilet and kitchen waste, and garden debris such as leaves, mulch, and dirt.
